Curriculum and Philosophy

Unity Christian High School offers a no-frills curriculum designed to prepare graduates for further education in the two or four year college of their choice. Over 90% of the Unity graduates go on to either a two or four year institution of higher learning.

For those students whose talents are in hands-on vocations (computer maintenance and repair, food service, auto repair, collision repair, and building trades), accommodations are made during the junior and senior years to attend the Whiteside Area Career Center (WACC) in Sterling, IL. Students attending WACC must reside in the Riverbend or Morrison School Districts. Some students are involved in an on-the-job training program at area businesses.

Minimum requirements for graduation are 4 years of English, 2 years of math, 2 years of science, 3.5 years of social studies, 4 semesters each of Bible and Physical Education, 1 year of computer, 1 semester of consumer education, 1 year of fine arts, 1 semester of speech, and 10 semesters of electives from math, science, social studies, Spanish, business, art, or drafting.

Many colleges (Illinois State Schools) now require 3 years of science for admission. College bound students are strongly urged to take as much math and science as possible.

Unity Christian offers the opportunity to participate in IHSA athletics. Sports for men include soccer, basketball, and baseball. Volleyball and basketball are offered for women. Students can participate in student government, academic bowl, band and choir.

The ACT composite score for the last five years at Unity is:

  • 2008-22.1
  • 2007-21.6
  • 2206-19.9
  • 2005-22.0
  • 2004-21.9

Unity Christian High School offers a solid college prep program with emphasis on integration of Biblical concepts in all areas of instruction.

U.C.S. Philosophy of Purpose and Objectives

Philosophy
Unity Christian School is established and operated by Christian families in obedience to God's command to "nurture your children in the ways of the Lord". God instituted the family and gave to parents the responsibility for instruction, so that His promise of redemption would be passed throughout the generations.

Statement of Purpose
To provide a formal education from a biblical perspective for the whole child which helps families prepare children for their principal tasks in life, namely, to tend the earth as belonging to God, to present Christ to others as Savior and Lord, and to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

This purpose is expressed at Unity Christian in the following, which we hold as our Basic Commitments:

  • An excellent, COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM that enables students to identify and develop to their fullest, their God-given talents and abilities; and prepares them to pursue careers after graduation which are personally rewarding and God glorifying. "For from him and through him and to him are all things" (Romans 11:36).
  • A competent CHRISTIAN STAFF, with certified administrators and teachers, which embraces and models the beliefs and values taught by Christian parents at home, and assists them in their God-given responsibility to educate their children "in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).
  • An evangelical BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE integrated into all learning that guides students in their acquisition of knowledge and skill, and equips them to discern truth and error and to make God-honoring decisions throughout their lives. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10).
  • A challenging EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAM providing academic, artistic, athletic, democratic, and social experiences which show students how they can integrate the teaching and principles of the Bible into their lives, both within and outside the classroom. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God" (I Corinthians 10:31).
  • "Christian education is the faithful response of parents and the Christian community to God's instructions about the nurture and training of His children. As a community of believers, we commit ourselves to establishing a system of education that enables God's children to study every aspect of His Word and His World as citizens of His Kingdom. Christian schooling ... is deeply rooted in Christ, is as broad as the scope of creation and culture, and is alive with the energy of youngsters and adolescents who are learning to be and become everything that God intends them to be as they serve Him joyfully and faithfully."*
