Second Grade News
Week of September 6
Curriculum News:
Math
This week we will be numbering a clock face and then identifying the time one hour ago and one hour from now. Next we will be identifying even and odd numbers and ordinal position to twelfth. On Friday there will be an assessment on the adding zero and adding one facts. We will begin the twos. Our teaching point is to know that we number our days that we may present a heart of wisdom to God. (Psalm 90:12)
Spelling
We will have a test on the following words on Friday: able, mild, lady, time, bake, ride, sale, care, kind, pilot, quite, Bible, share, final, quiet, apron. Spelling homework will be on Tuesday to put words in alphabetical order and on Thursday to write sentences for ten of the list words. Spelling homework will remain the same throughout the year with Mondays being three times each practice, Tuesdays ABC order and Thursdays sentences with a test on Friday.
Language Arts
As we continue to read the selection "Because of You" we will see how God has a plan for each of us to be kind and caring of his creation. We will write a paragraph about a place where we can show acts of kindness. Students will learn how to organize their thinking by first making a list. When doing the daily reading homework be sure to listen to your child read aloud. Help them to correct oral mistakes and read for fluency. Have you found a box or bin to keep the decodable stories in? We are up to ten books already. These are great for building fluency and practicing sound/spelling combinations.
Social Studies, Bible and Science
These subjects are taught by Mrs. Hemphill in the afternoons. She will send a separate update telling you what the memory work and topics are each week. Look for it in your child’s backpack.
Notes
There will not be chapel at the elementary building this week. Instead we will join with the High School on THURSDAY morning at 9:38 for a Make a Difference assembly given by Rob Frank. He will explain the needs of Haiti and give us a preview of his benefit concert that will be happening Friday, September 24 on Camanch Ave.
Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend. We will see everyone back on Tuesday.
