Dutch Days
It has long been a tradition of Unity Christian School to celebrate the Dutch heritage of the community of Fulton. 33 years ago, Patty Ritzema, mother of superintendent Dick Ritzema, with the help of the Christian School Auxiliary began the celebration of Dutch Days with the serving of a traditional Dutch dinner at what was then known as CommUnity Christian School, a.k.a. Unity Christian School. From this small beginning, the entire Dutch Days' Festival was developed. The residents of Fulton expanded the celebration to the first full weekend in May.
An authentic Dutch meal is served in the Unity high school gym on Friday evening. The meal, consisting of roast beef (Hutspot Met Klapstuk), mashed potatoes (or mashed potatoes with cabbage- Boeskool), gravy, split pea soup (Erwten Soep), buttermilk soup, red cabbage, currant rolls, and more, is enough to make your mouth water.
On Saturday, Dutch pastries such as banket, ole bollen, and poffertjes are offered along with the sale of the traditional wooden shoes and Delft items.
Many of the young children participate in the traditional street scrubbing which begins the parade and sing Dutch songs as they later march in the parade.
